So you’re looking to create a Mastermind group. My name is Joe Burnich and I have created several Mastermind groups over the years. Since 2015, I’ve been creating and running Mastermind groups, both in person and online through Zoom. Here’s my take and a few tips on how to facilitate a Mastermind group. You can also check out the link below for an invitation to our group. We’d love for you to cheek it out and see if it’s for you. But first, let me show how to create a Mastermind group.
I created my first Mastermind group because I felt isolated. I was recently divorced and needed new friends. Friends that were all about business and growing themselves not only professionally, but personally. I wanted friends who were entrepreneurs. That’s what I like, it’s what I like to talk about, and it’s what gets me excited. I didn’t need a mindless, chit-chatty, ego-driven networking social hour. I needed to connect with people who really understand what I’m doing and what I’m going through. I wanted like-minded people.
To find these like-minded people, I had to go to the normal networking groups in Missoula, Montana, because I knew people were looking for something different but they, like me, didn’t know where to go. I highly recommend you get involved in business or networking groups. They’re out there, even in smaller towns. I’m in a town of 50,000 people and I found five or six different groups I could go to for free and network. Whether it’s at a bar or online with COVID, there is something out there and business owners are out there who love to network, have drinks, and chit-chat. This is the best way I’ve found to start inviting people to a group.
I went to these networking groups and started inviting people to the Mastermind group I was creating and at first, it was SLOPPY! It was messy AND it sucked. My first Mastermind group sucked, but it was still powerful and people kept coming back. People liked it. People liked what was going on.
Since that first group, I’ve made it structured and created value with different agendas. This way, people knew what was going on. We have different types of meetings and I have other videos on how to run a Mastermind group and the different types of Mastermind meetings within your group. What’s great is all you need is three people, three people to start a really solid Mastermind group.
At first, I recommend free Mastermind groups, then, eventually, you can charge. Bottom line is just get the ball rolling. Then, if you want to do an online Zoom version, I think the best way is to get into Facebook groups and ask people if they’re interested. There are tons of people on Facebook and Linkedin business groups. These people are stuck and asking questions. They’re in pain and you can come in and say, “Hey, you want to jump on a Zoom call once a week and hammer all this stuff out?” This is exactly what a Mastermind group is all about. You can also do paid marketing, but I don’t think you need to. You can create a free Mastermind group and eventually make a little bit of an income with one once you get the hang of it. Now, if you get really good at it and you get high level people in your group, you can also turn it into a business.
Right now, my Mastermind group is my passion project. It’s not a full-time business. I’ve got a marketing agency for my business and my Mastermind group as my passion. Mastermind does bring in a little bit of money, just enough to keep the lights on and pay for an upgraded Zoom account. But, in reality, the Mastermind group is all about breakthroughs and helping people grow professionally and personally.
Join a Mastermind group first, join a real weekly Mastermind group and figure out how it works. Don’t do it the hard way I did and mess up for six months just trying to figure this thing out. You can learn a ton just by being in a group and learning how facilitation runs. It’s helpful to know the different types of meetings and problems you can run into facilitating a group. So, it’s best to get your hands dirty for a few months and then go create your own Mastermind group.
Now, I’d like to ask you to click on the link below for an invite to check out a free session. If it’s something you gel with, and we think you’d be a good fit, you can join. See if a Mastermind group is something you actually want to create. Maybe it’ll be the best thing you’ve ever done. Maybe it’ll be a waste of time. Who knows? Jump in and join my Mastermind group, join us every week, and see if it’s right for you. Take notes, learn how it’s done and then go start your own.
